How I got into fitness

Many people say that I can find time for workout because I love working out and its easy for me to motivate myself to do it. I have a news for them. If I could stay healthy and strong without putting any effort towards working out. I would rather spend that time sleeping because I love sleeping, not working out.

I never stepped in the gym till I was 28. I used to wonder why thin people workout. I was very ignorant in that age. One day a colleague in office said to me “Gomti, you look fat now, you have gained a lot of weight.” I wasn’t angry at him. I went to the restroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I started browsing pictures from a year ago. He was right. I had gained around 25 pounds within a year. Whats worse is that, I didn’t realize it at all. Not even when I bought a size 5 jeans. I used to wear size 0 just an year before. I left office that day and took a bus straight to shopping mall. I bought a a pair of leggings, a sports bra, a tshirt and workout shoes and went straight to gym. I filled the application and took membership. I was determined to lose all the weight and go back to size 0 as soon as I could. After I took membership, I went right into the change room and got ready. I looked around, it was my first time in a gym. I stepped on to a treadmill and started walking on it. I increased the pace to 5 miles/hour and I couldn’t run for 1 minute straight. I was ashamed of myself. I ran for around 30 minutes taking breaks in between on 4 miles/hour the first day. Since that day, I went to the gym every day and kept running. Within a month I was able to run continuously for 30 minutes on 5 miles/hour. I started using machines also slowly. I browsed on internet to find healthy ways of losing weight. I cut down on calorie intake and sugar. I lost 25 pounds in 3 months. That was fast!!! I continued working out in that gym every day for 45 minutes till I moved to another city. And then the workout stopped. I worked out on and off but not regularly. I still managed to keep most of the weight off. Then I got married in 2012 and moved to Austin TX. My ex-husband used to run. So one day I asked if I could join him to the gym. He was running at 7 miles/hour and I could barely run for 10 minutes on 5 miles/hour. My goal was to be able to run 5 miles in an hour within a month. After a month, I was running 6 miles/hour. One day when I went to the gym on a different time, I saw a boot-camp class going on, I didn’t know that’s what they called it at that time. The apartment management offered free classes at the gym. That day there were 4 girls and 2 guys in that class. The class looked fun but I was shy to just walk into the class. Next day I went to the gym at the same time and asked the trainer if I could join the class. Man, it was hard!!! But, I am a competitive person and motivated to get better. So I continued going that class every day. Within few months, I had lost a lot of weight, I had gained a lot of muscles and my trainer said, I was his measuring stick for others. Since then I never stopped working out. And there are multiple reasons for it and loving workout isn’t one of those.

I can eat anything I like without worrying about gaining weight. Not that I eat anything but if I want to, I am able to. I love eating.

I rarely fall sick. I am the healthiest I have ever been.

I sleep well.

I can play with my kid and get him exhausted.

I love seeing the improvement in myself everyday. I can do things I never thought or imagined.

I can wear what I want without worrying how it will fit me.

When first time I started working out, my motivation was to lose weight so I could be thin again. That is not the primary reason anymore. Staying healthy and having a good state of mind is the primary reason and for that reason, I will never stop working out.

Go workout, go change your life!!
